Behind the Brand: The Story Before the Logo

When people see Tru Phoenix today, they see a brand. They see books. Apparel. A foundation. A podcast. Music. Storytelling. Different projects carrying different messages into different spaces.
I see all of those things too. But I also see where they came from. Because before Tru Phoenix became a company, it was personal. It was built from pieces of my life.
My creativity.
My faith.
My questions.
My experiences.
My victories.
My losses.
The lessons I learned willingly and some I probably would've preferred to skip.
The person I was, the person I had to become, and the person I am still discovering.
That's why I've never been interested in building something simply for the sake of saying I built it. There has to be a story. And more importantly, there has to be a reason for telling it.
One Brand. Different Expressions.
Over the years, Tru Phoenix has grown into something much larger than what I originally envisioned. Publishing gave my words somewhere to live. Tru Phoenix Apparel allowed stories to move beyond pages and become something people could physically wear.
The Amanda B. Fluellen Book Scholarship created another way to invest in someone else's story. The QB Zone gave conversation a home. Music opened a door I once thought had permanently closed. And through it all, Tru Phoenix World continued becoming an umbrella large enough to hold the different ways I wanted to create, connect, and contribute.
On the surface, those things may seem unrelated. To me, they've always belonged together.
Because everything underneath Tru Phoenix ultimately comes back to three things:
Education. Enlightenment. Entertainment.
Sometimes I want to teach you something.
Sometimes I want to make you think.
Sometimes I want to encourage you.
Sometimes I want to tell a story that reminds you that you aren't the only person who has experienced something.
And sometimes?
I simply want to create something that makes you smile, laugh, move, feel good, or enjoy yourself.
There is room for all of it.
Because there is room for all of me.
The Story Has Always Mattered
One thing I've learned about myself as a creator is that simply communicating something isn't enough for me. I want to create an experience. Whether I'm writing about faith, grief, purpose, pleasure, resilience, identity, family, motivation, or transformation, I don't want people standing outside of the work looking in.
I want the distance to disappear.
I want a reader to feel like we're having a conversation.
I want someone listening to a song to experience the emotion underneath the lyrics.
I want someone watching me perform spoken word to temporarily forget that they're sitting in an audience.
I want someone wearing something I've created to understand that the words or imagery they're carrying mean something.
That's storytelling to me.
It isn't simply: “Let me tell you what happened.”
It's: “Come closer. Let me show you what it felt like to be there.”
And that philosophy has become part of the foundation beneath everything I create.
Why the Phoenix?
The phoenix has always represented more to me than simply rising after something difficult.
Yes, there is survival in it.
There is resilience.
There is transformation.
But there is also becoming.
And becoming doesn't always require destruction first.
Sometimes becoming means discovering another part of yourself.
Sometimes it means finally trusting a gift you've questioned.
Sometimes it means returning to something you once loved.
Sometimes it means changing direction.
Sometimes it means realizing that the version of you who got you here doesn't have to be the final version of you.
And sometimes becoming is simply giving yourself permission to ask: What else is possible?
That's the spirit I want Tru Phoenix to carry.
Not perfection.
Not pretending difficult things don't exist.
Not remaining permanently attached to everything we've survived either.
Movement.
Forward.
Upward.
Becoming.

And Then Came Wings
That brings us to Wings Collection ’26. This collection couldn't have existed without the brand underneath it because Wings represents so much of what Tru Phoenix has always stood for.
Five designs.
Five different expressions.
Five stories.
Each approaching transformation from a different place. And although this is an apparel collection, I've never viewed these pieces as simply shirts. They're storytelling. The medium just changed. That's why this campaign has been so intentional about allowing you to experience the world surrounding the collection—not simply showing you products and asking you to buy them. Because once again: The story matters.

Behind Everything Is a Person Still Becoming
There is something else I never want to lose as Tru Phoenix grows. The person behind it.
I'm proud of what I've built. I'm excited about where we're going. And there are dreams for this company that haven't even made it out of my head yet.
But I'm still becoming too.
Still learning.
Still creating.
Still evolving.
Still discovering different ways to use what I've been given.
And perhaps that's why the name Tru Phoenix continues to fit. The company isn't standing somewhere waiting for me to arrive.
We're becoming together.
So when you support a book, watch a video, wear something from Tru Phoenix Apparel, listen to something I've created, share my work with somebody else, or simply take a few minutes to experience one of my stories, you're participating in something deeply personal to me.
And I don't take that lightly.
So before the next launch...
Before another product...
Before another story...
I wanted you to meet me here. Behind the brand. Not simply to see what I've built......
.....But to understand a little more about why I keep building.
